State evaluates budget cuts

State agencies submitted proposals yesterday for 10% budget cuts as requested by the governor, and the effects will be significant.

Ryan Low, commissioner of the Department of Administrative and Financial Services, will lead an examination of the proposals in anticipation of the budget the governor is scheduled to submit to the Legislature Jan. 9, according to the Ellsworth American. Preliminary revenue figures show the state facing a budget gap of $500 million.

Proposed cuts include eliminating nine district attorneys, services to veterans, two positions at the Department of Economic and Community Development, 30 programs from the Maine Community College System and the canine and underwater recovery teams of the Maine State Police. The governor's office has already eliminated or reduced several positions, including the full-time director of communications position, the paper reported.
