State gov't takes first shutdown day

Most of the state government is shut down today, the first of 20 such shutdown days that will save the state nearly $14 million over the next two years.

The 20 shutdown days were included in the $5.8 billion biennial budget Gov. John Baldacci signed into law in May. Some state workers, such as law enforcement and corrections officers, are exempt from the shutdown days. The 20 days are expected to save the state $13.8 million, according to the Kennebec Journal.
