State lowers shrimp catch limit

The state's Department of Marine Resources lowered the daily catch limit for shrimp trappers, and extended fishing hours for trawlers.

The Bangor Daily News reported that the daily limit for trappers was lowered from 800 pounds a day to 500 pounds a day. Trawlers that were previously limited to fishing from sunrise to 3 p.m. on Monday and Wednesday will now be allowed to fish around the clock on those days.

This is the fourth consecutive season of reduced catch limits for the fishery, which has a target limit of 625 metric tons this year. That is nearly a quarter of the catch limit for the 2012 shrimp season in the Gulf of Maine.
