The state has reprimanded a doctor who specializes in medical marijuana for unprofessional conduct at a “medical seminar” he held in Orono early last year.
Dr. William Ortiz is facing nearly $3,500 in fines and a reprimand as part of a consent agreement he signed on Sept. 9 with the Maine Board of Licensure in Medicine, the state announced Monday. Ortiz has been licensed in Maine since 2012 and runs a private practice in Caribou called The Health Clinic LLC.
The state board sought the reprimand and fines against Ortiz because he failed to “create and maintain adequate records and for the manner and location of his medical marijuana clinics.”
Of the 59 people he saw at a medical conference he organized in Orono in March 2013, the state said 44 medical records had no documentation that could prove any examinations were performed. The state also said he “created a negative impression of his activities by conducting clinics, seeing patients at unusual times" and by handling too many patients.
Ortiz has agreed that the state had sufficient evidence to determine that he was engaging in unprofessional conduct, and has agreed to not do it again, the state said.
