State sees record cranberry haul

The 2012 fall cranberry harvest set a new yield record of 37,729 barrels.

The Bangor Daily News reported that the previous fall harvest record stood at 29,000 barrels, set in 2010.

Charles Armstrong, a cranberry specialist with the University of Maine Cooperative Extension, told the paper he thinks the increased harvest was a result of better pest control products and insecticides that target creatures harmful to the harvest while leaving beneficial insects unharmed. Fewer than 250 acres statewide are harvested for cranberries, with the bulk of the acreage in Washington County.

Although the harvest was a record, Armstrong told the paper that prices were average, with wet berries selling at 35 cents per pound and dry berries ranging between $1 and $2 per pound.
