State settles suit over Pownal timber harvesting

Maine forest File Photo Maine has settled a suit against a Durham logging company that allegedly violated water-protection rules.

The state has settled a lawsuit against a Durham-based logging company over allegations it didn’t follow water-protection rules while harvesting timber in Pownal.

Maine Custom Woodlands LLC agreed to pay $3,000 after the Maine Forest Service claimed the company didn’t take reasonable measures to protect water quality on the harvested land, leading to sediment deposits in a local stream. The actions violated the Maine Forest Practices Act, the state said in a news release Thursday.

The company, which initially disputed the charges, must also conduct a one-day staff training session in water quality protection.

The Forest Service and the state attorney general’s office dismissed the suit and released the company and the Pownal landowner from any further claims relating to the allegations, according to the release.

Maine Custom Woodlands is a full-service timber harvesting, land management, logging and excavation company founded in 1993 by forest engineer Thomas Cushman, according to a website description.
