State to consider rezoning parcel in Penobscot County for use as mineral mine

The Maine Land Use Planning Commission has received a petition to rezone 200 acres of land near Mount Chase, in northern Penobscot County, for potential use as a mineral mine.

The commission, which oversees land use for Maine’s unorganized territories, received the request from Wolfden Mt. Chase LLC to change the zoning of a parcel in T6 R6 WELS from a general management subdistrict to a planned development one, for the purpose of “an underground metallic mineral mine and associated buildings and infrastructure,” according to a news release Monday.

The new designation is the only zoning that allows for metallic mineral mining in the unorganized territories.

The petition is the first step in a multi-agency process to review the proposal, according to the LUPC. A public hearing is also required.
