State to pay $678K in drug law ruling
The state has paid $678,189 in legal fees in a battle over a 2007 law that restricted drug manufacturers' use of information about doctors' drug prescriptions.
In a press release, Gov. Paul LePage says a federal judge last month ordered Maine to pay those fees.
Last year, The Associated Press reported, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down a similar law in Vermont after a case brought forward by the same plaintiff in the Maine case, IMS Health Inc., based in New Jersey.
That law required the company to get permission from doctors before selling data on prescription-writing habits to drug companies for use in tailoring sales pitches.
In the Vermont case, the state was ordered to pay $2.4 million in legal fees.
