State wins $1M in drug settlement

Maine will receive nearly $1 million as part of a large-scale settlement with AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals.

A total of 38 states reached a $68.5 million settlement with the drug company to resolve allegations that it improperly marketed its antipsychotic drug, Seroquel, according to a press release from the Maine Office of the Attorney General. According to the complaint, the states argued that AstraZeneca engaged in unfair and deceptive practices when it marketed Seroquel for uses not approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, withheld negative information about its safety and failed to disclose its potential side effects. It's the largest multi-state consumer protection-based pharmaceutical marketing settlement in the nation.

Maine's portion of the settlement will be used for prescription drug abuse prevention, victim aid and public protection programs, according to the release.
