State workers mull new contract sans raises

Union officials are asking the nearly 10,000 executive branch state workers to approve a new contract that includes no pay raises.

The two-year contract is "the best contract we could get given the times," Maine State Employees Association President Bruce Hodsdon told the Kennebec Journal. Union officials sent the contract with an "ought to accept" recommendation, according to the union's website. Union members have until August 17 to return ballots.

Last legislative session, lawmakers instituted 20 unpaid days off for non-emergency state workers, froze merit pay, got rid of longevity pay and voted to require state employees to start paying a portion of their health benefits, according to the Kennebec Journal. Union officials said they would be working closely with the state to avoid future layoffs.
