State workers ratify new contract

State union workers have ratified a new two-year contract that includes no pay raises for the 10,000 state workers it covers.

The Maine State Employees Association did not expect to be able to receive pay raises for its members, but the union's negotiating team was able to strengthen contract language around layoffs, discipline and the state's ability to hire outside contractors, according to the Kennebec Journal. The contract is "the best contract we could get given the times," Bruce Hodsdon, the union's president, told the newspaper.

Last legislative session, lawmakers instituted 20 unpaid days off for non-emergency state workers, froze merit pay, got rid of longevity pay and voted to require state employees to start paying a portion of their health benefits, according to the paper.
