A man who broke the news of murders, mayhem and more for over three decades will lead a new crisis communications unit at a Maine public relations firm.
Steve McCausland, who retired in June as spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety, has joined Marshall Communications, according to a news release.
In his 32 years with the department, McCausland provided official communications of more than 500 homicides, another 500 fire deaths and thousands of motor vehicle fatalities, and played a role in every major criminal investigation by the department. He also served as an advisor to eight commissioners of public safety and eight chiefs of the Maine State Police on media relations and public and governmental policy.
McCausland started his media career as the news director of a radio station in Bath and worked part-time for the Portland Press Herald, Associated Press and WCSH-TV in Portland.
At Marshall, he now heads a division of the 10-person firm that will provide clients with communications planning in advance of crises, as well as assistance during them, founder and CEO Nancy Marshall said. Among his duties, McCausland will help provide coaching and training, as well as “spokesperson for hire” services.
“There is no one in Maine who is better qualified for this work,” said Marshall. “Having a vital, growing business involves constantly evolving to meet the needs of the marketplace and this addition to our team takes our agency to the next level both statewide and nationally.”
McCausland said that Marshall approached him about joining her firm five years ago, and that he wants to put his experience to use.
“It was only a year ago that I was in Farmington to assist with the details of one of the worst explosions in Maine history. Now in retirement, I still have the desire to help organizations face crisis situations in communicating clearly and concisely with the media.”
Marshall Communications, founded in 1991, has offices in Augusta and Portland.
I am so proud to now have Steve as part of my team at Marshall Communications!
