Stonewall Kitchen LLC, a York-based specialty food producer, is continuing its acquisition streak, and this time it's with the addition of another Maine company.
Stonewall bought Village Candle, a maker of scented candles headquartered in Wells, for an undisclosed price, according to a news release Monday.
The food producer already markets a small assortment of candles, but the acquisition gives Stonewall a more expansive line that’s distributed throughout the U.S. and in 32 other countries.
“This allows us to really expand that offering with an incredible assortment of specialty candles made 'just up the road' here in Maine,” said CEO John Stiker in the release. “We think this combination is a terrific fit."
Last August Stonewall acquired the Vermont Village brand of apple sauce and apple cider vinegar products, made in Barre, Vt. That deal came just weeks after Stonewall itself was acquired by a Boston investment firm, Audax Private Equity, from a New York firm.
Stonewall has acquired several other brands in recent years. But the purchase of Village Candle is its first of another Maine company.
Founded in 1991 by partners Jonathan King and Jim Stott, Stonewall Kitchen began business by selling jams and jellies at local farmers' markets. Today its product line includes sauces, condiments, crackers and baking mixes.
The company has more than 8,500 wholesale accounts in the U.S. and elsewhere, operates two cooking schools, and sells through an online and catalog division as well as retail stores in Camden, Portland, York and six other New England locations.
