Strong potato harvest expected

Maine's potato crops this year are doing well, thanks to Hurricane Earl and a rainy September.

Harvest is 80%-85% complete on this season's estimated 55,000 acres of potatoes in Aroostook County, and farmers expect an average-size yield and above-average quality, according to the Bangor Daily News. Tim Hobbs, director of development and grower relations for the Maine Potato Board, told the paper that there were no cases of blight this year, and that rain in September offset the effects of a dry August. He estimated the harvest would end by mid-next week, but did not estimate how many pounds of potatoes the crop would yield this year.

Last year, the value of Maine's 1.5 billion pounds of potato crop increased 5% from 2008 to $150 million, according to the paper.
