Study: BNAS closure already having an impact

The Greater Portland region's rank plummeted in an annual survey of metropolitan job growth released today by the Milken Institute in Los Angeles.

The 2007 Best Performing Cities Index said the Portland-South Portland-Biddeford region fell from 42nd place in 2006 to 157th place out of 179 U.S. cities, mostly due to early impacts of the Brunswick Naval Air Station realignment and closure, set to occur in 2011. The think tank compiled the list using employment and salary growth data.

Only Lafayette, La., saw a bigger move, jumping 119 places to 24th because more residents are settling in the area post-Hurricane Katrina, the report said.
