Study: Calais racino would generate $11.9M

A University of Maine report released yesterday says a racino in Washington County would generate between $11.9 million and $13 million in slot machine revenue per year, more than the total annual sales posted by the area's hotels and restaurants.

Todd Gabe, associate economics professor at the University of Maine in Orono, based the report's findings on average gambling revenues nationally and the number of people that facility in Calais could attract from Maine and Canadian border towns, according to a press release. While annual slot machine revenue at a Calais racino would surpass the total sales posted by the area's hotels and resturants, slot revenue at Hollywood Slots racino in Bangor is less than 20% of the total hospitality sales in the Bangor region.

The Passamaquoddy Tribe asked Gabe to complete the study because it wants to build a racino with 1,500 slot machines in Washington County. Voters will decide in November whether the tribe can build the facility.
