Sugarloaf accident result of weather, human error

The state agency investigating a ski lift accident at Sugarloaf that injured eight skiers this winter has found human error, weather and maintenance problems as contributing factors.

The Maine State Board of Elevator and Tramway Safety said Friday it could not determine the exact cause of the accident that led eight people to seek medical treatment Dec. 28 after a chairlift they were on derailed, dropping them nearly 30 feet into the snow below. The agency's report said high winds, coupled with improper attempts to fix the lift and inadequate safety procedures, contributed to the accident. The 35-year-old lift had been scheduled for replacement by the ski resort.

Sugarloaf General Manager John Diller said in a statement the Carrabassett Valley ski resort has adopted new procedures and is formalizing its training and maintenance record keeping, reported the Portland Press Herald.
