After the New England Patriots’ come-from-behind 34-28 victory over the Atlanta Falcons in Super Bowl LI, Scofflaw Brewing Co. of Atlanta is coming through in style with a new beer in its tasting room this week.
The beer, G.O.A.T., stands for “Greatest Of All Time” New England Patriots, although Marty Jones, a spokesman for Scofflaw, told Mainebiz the brewer refers to it internally as “Get Over A Thrashing.” Also, Scofflaw’s mascot is a goat.
G.O.A.T. beer is a “New England compatriots-style IPA” brewed with Maine-grown malted barley and organic flakes oats, according to Scofflaw. It’s hopped with Simcoe, Amarillo and Mosaic hops. The malted barley is from Maine Malt House in Mapleton and the oats were grown and milled by Aurora Mills & Farm in Linneus.
Before the game, The Plain Dealer wrote in early February that Shipyard Brewing Co. owner Fred Forsley bet Scofflaw owner Matt Shirah that the losing brewery had to make a special batch of beer chosen from a recipe the winner selected and make it with local ingredients from the winner’s state. The loser also had to fly the winning team’s flag for a week or until the beer was gone. The newspaper noted Shipyard has been around since 1994, the year Atlanta hosted its first Super Bowl.
The G.O.A.T. beer is 7.9% alcohol by volume and will be served on draft at Scofflaw’s tasting room starting at 5 p.m. on March 30, should you happen to be in Atlanta that day.
Thanks to the nail-biting win, Shipyard doesn’t have to brew up what it would have called “Feel the Pressure.” Despite Forsley’s reference to “Deflategate,” the beer’s name may have helped in the Pats’ comeback. Not that New England fans are superstitious.
The new IPA is designed to help ease the pain of the Atlanta Falcons’ loss, Scofflaw Brewmaster Travis Herman said in a statement. But there will be something for Pats fans as well.
Said Herman, “For spring days when the Atlanta weather is cool, we’ll use lower pressure in our kegs so Patriots fans can hold onto their glass.”
