Survey: Manufacturing jobs fall 40%

A survey of the state's manufacturers conducted by U.S. Rep. Mike Michaud shows that the state's manufacturing work force has declined 40% since 1994.

A total of 85 manufacturers responded to the survey on Michaud's website. Based on the data, Michaud said 13% of Maine's factories have closed in the past decade, and that 141 plants have shuttered in the last three years, putting 8,600 employees out of work. During the recession, from December 2007 to June 2009, Maine lost 12.5% of its manufacturing work force, as well as another 2,100 jobs since then.

However, only 13% of respondents said they planned to lay off workers this year, and 28% said they were looking to hire. Yet, more than half said they were having trouble finding workers with the right skills.
