Survey: ME's construction industry ready for projects

Maine's engineering and construction industry has the capacity to handle a significant increase in work anticipated from the federal stimulus bill, which is expected to be passed today or over the weekend, according to a new industry survey.

The Maine Better Transportation Association and the American Council of Engineering Companies of Maine today released a survey of 35 engineering firms and 18 heavy construction firms, completed over the last two months, which show the industry has the work force and capacity to handle an influx of funds for "shovel-ready" projects. MBTA Executive Director Maria Fuentes said the fear was that since many firms have downsized in recent years, they wouldn't be in a position to handle an increase in workload. But companies said they had an annual capacity of $500 million worth of work, according to a press release from the two associations, more than enough to handle the anticipated $130 million in new funding for shovel-ready highway projects and $100 million or more for other infrastructure projects, the press release said.

The survey was completed upon a request from the Maine Department of Transportation.
