TABOR-like bill considered

A bill to require voter endorsement of increased taxes is back before the Legislature, for the second time in three years.

LD 976, "An Act to Provide Tax Relief," would allow voters to reject a tax increase, and would require voter approval for state spending above the rate of inflation and population growth and for property taxes that increase faster than personal income.

The governor did not send a representative to the public hearing Wednesday, but has said he opposes the measure, according to the Associated Press. The bill, which is also opposed by the Maine Municipal Association, was written by the Maine Heritage Policy Center a conservative think tank in Portland.
