Tax Foundation ups Maine rank

The national Tax Foundation has bumped Maine up seven slots on its ranking of states with tax structures most favorable to businesses.

Last year, the organization's list ranked Maine No. 37 in the measure that compares states in five areas of taxation relevant to businesses.

Maine was ranked No. 30 on this year's list, which looks at: corporate, individual income and sales taxes, unemployment insurance taxes and taxes on property.

The study cited the removal of a ban on net operating loss carry forwards in the corporate income tax code and the repeal of the alternative minimum tax in 2012 as the chief reasons for Maine's higher ranking.

Maine saw the largest jump in rankings this year, followed by Michigan, which rose in rank by six places in the organization's "tax climate index."
