TDS Telecom plans fiber expansion to 21,000 rural Maine addresses

Paralleling Maine’s push to expand high-speed internet service to rural residents, Wisconsin-based TDS Telecommunications LLC plans to bring its high-speed fiber internet network to more than two dozen communities in Somerset and Franklin counties.

Construction in Maine is expected to begin this year, according to a news release.

The projects will deliver up to 2 gigabit-per-second internet download and upload speeds to residents and businesses, TDS said. About 21,000 rural Maine addresses will have access to the fiber network.

“From telework and remote learning to small business operations, the pandemic has shown how crucial a high-speed internet network is to a community,” said Andrew Petersen, TDS Telecom’s senior vice president of corporate affairs.

In addition to Hampden, where TDS previously announced the introduction of service, TDS is planning to implement its fiber network in Athens, Avon, Bigelow Township, Brighton Plantation, Cambridge, Carrabassett Valley, Concord Township, Coplin Plantation, Embden, Eustis/Stratton, Freeman, Harmony, Hartland, Highland Plantation, Kingfield, Lexington Township, Madrid, Mercer, New Portland, New Vineyard, Norridgewock, North Anson, Palmyra,, Phillips, Ripley, Rome, Salem, Smithfield, Solon, St. Albans, Strong, Warren, Weld, Wellington, West Gardiner and Wyman Township.

In addition to high-speed internet, the network includes TV and phone service, and 10-gig dedicated connections will be available for businesses, as well as voice-over-internet-protocol communications.

TDS has served Maine since 1971.
