Tea farming in Maine? Yep

With Maine well-steeped in the locally sourced foodie movement, tea farmers could be well-positioned to fill a new niche in the market.

New tea farmer Mark E. Mooradian of Karnak Farm in Saco is starting to see results after years of growing elderflower on 30 acres, the Bangor Daily News reported. Instead of importing from the Middle East, which “has gotten to be a mess, we are harvesting a native plant that grows wild in Maine,” Mooradian told the paper. “I am hoping to make it more popular. It’s moderately popular now.”

Tea also is known for its health benefits.

Specialty coffee was the big foodie niche in the 1990s, when Arabica Coffee Co. and Coffee By Design were pioneers in Portland's local, independent coffee community, establishing a coffee culture in Portland that today boasts three coffeehouses per 10,000 people.

Portland’s relatively affluent population, robust foodie culture and strong Buy-Local mentality help support the artisanal food scene.
