Thibeault Energy owners file for bankruptcy

The founders of now-defunct Thibeault Energy in Brunswick have filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy protection, five months after the business abruptly closed.

In documents filed with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court Tuesday, Conrad Thibeault and his wife, Vivian, said they owe between $1 million and $10 million to as many as 99 creditors, according to The Times Record. Listed among creditors are Brunswick-area businesses including Downeast Energy, Brunswick Ford, CN Brown and The Times Record. The couple listed assets between $100,000 and $500,000. The company closed Jan. 22, after customers complained of not receiving oil through pre-paid contracts. Its 36 vehicles were auctioned off last month.

Despite receiving hundreds of consumer complaints, Maine's attorney general will not pursue criminal charges against the Thibeaults, according to the paper. Sen. Stan Gerzofsky, D-Brunswick, told the paper that Attorney General William Schneider told him that the Thibeaults did not commit any crimes.
