Thomas College president to retire

Thomas College President George Spann will retire in June, he announced yesterday.

Spann, 68, has spent 23 years at the Waterville college, and is credited with revitalizing the institution in the early 1990s, the Morning Sentinel reported. "George took on a small, struggling school, and made it into what it is today -- a strong, vibrant college poised for significant growth and a tremendous future," said Conrad Ayotte, co-chair of the board of trustees, in a statement. Spann plans to spend more time with his grandchildren and do volunteer work, according to the paper. The college will begin a nationwide search for Spann's replacement.

In January, Thomas unveiled a 15-year strategic plan led by Spann that includes nearly doubling the size of its campus and its full-time enrollment to 1,400.
