Thomaston board OKs new Walmart

Thomaston planning officials have given final approval to a $28 million Walmart store, allowing the project to advance.

The town's planning board yesterday voted unanimously to approve the site and subdivision plans for the 150,000-square-foot retail store and outbuildings, according to the Herald Gazette. Besides a Walmart, developer Scott Shapiro also wants to build a 5,600-square-foot restaurant and space for other retail stores totaling 62,400 square feet. The new store will have about 400 employees, many of whom will be transferred from the Walmart location in Rockland, which will close if the Thomaston store is built.

Shapiro said he is seeking a permit from the Maine Department of Environmental Protection and that he hopes to start construction by next spring.
