Thos. Moser announces layoffs
One of Maine's highest profile furniture makers has announced layoffs due to the soft economy.
Thos. Moser Cabinetmakers in Auburn, which makes custom cherry furniture by hand, said the company is restructuring its office and production facilities, according to the Sun Journal. The company did not specify the number of layoffs, but early reports peg the number at 35, the paper reported. The paper quoted a company spokesman who attributed the layoffs to stalled orders, the result of the collapse of the housing and credit markets coupled with the recession.
Thos. Moser employs about 100 people in Auburn. It also maintains a catalog business and operates seven showrooms in Freeport, Boston, New York, Washington, D.C., Chicago, Los Angeles and San Francisco.
