Three weeklies to consolidate offices at parent company MaineToday Media

Three newspapers based in Falmouth are moving to the South Portland headquarters of their parent company, MaineToday Media.

The advertising sales staff of The Forecaster, covering the city of Portland; American Journal, covering Westbrook, Gorham, Buxton and the region; and Lakes Region Weekly, covering the towns of Windham, Gray, Raymond, Standish, Sebago, Naples, Casco, Bridgton and New Gloucester will be based at 295 Gannett Drive in South Portland as of Oct. 12, according to a news release published by The Forecaster.

News staffs for the three newspapers are moving to MaineToday Media offices at One City Center in Portland on an interim basis, while permanent space is configured at the Gannett Drive building.

The American Journal and the Lakes Region Weekly were part of Current Publishing, which was founded in 2001 and also published the Current in Scarborough, Cape Elizabeth and South Portland; and Tri-Town Weekly in Freeport, Durham and Pownal. Current Publishing merged with Sun Media Group in Lewiston in 2015. The Sun Media Group at that time included The Forecaster, the Sun Journal in Lewiston, and seven weekly publications in western Maine.

In November 2016, Sun Media Group announced the consolidation of the Tri-Town Weekly and The Current with the Northern and Southern editions of The Forecaster, due to their overlap over local news coverage.

In 2017, Reade Brower, owner of MaineToday Media, purchased Sun Media Group.

Maine Today Media, which publishes the Portland Press Herald, Maine Sunday Telegram, Kennebec Journal, Waterville Morning Sentinel and Coastal Journal, was acquired by Brower in 2015.  He then acquired the Sun Journal and its group of weekly newspapers in 2017, followed by the acquisitions announced in late March 2018 of The Times Record in Brunswick  and Journal Tribune in Biddeford and the Mainely Media weekly publications from the Sample News Group.

The acquisitions give Brower control of a large number of Maine weeklies and leave the Bangor Daily News, owned by its longtime publisher Richard Warren, as the only Maine daily not owned by Brower.
