Portland-based Tilson Technology Management has won a $270,335 contract to design, engineer and build a broadband network in a section of Ellsworth that includes the city’s Commerce Park, an industrial zone with land available for economic development.
The Ellsworth American reported that $250,000 of the award comes from a grant from the Northern Border Regional Commission that was awarded to the Ellsworth Business Development Corp. in 2014. That group has been spearheading the effort to bring higher-speed Internet service to the city.
The remaining money, up to $28,445, will come from the city’s economic development tax-increment financing, or TIF, program and not from property tax dollars, the weekly newspaper reported.
Tilson expects the project will take nine months to complete the permitting and installation of fiber optic lines and the creation of a hub station that could later serve as the connection point for future expansions, the newspaper reported.
Tilson, a national telecommunications and IT systems deployment company based in Portland, recently announced the expansion of its telecom construction practice at several offices around the country and the hiring of Jason Lander as the director of its construction services division. Lander will lead Tilson’s construction team at six national offices, building cellular, utility, transportation and government networks, the company reported in a release on its website.
