Tim Schneider, general counsel of Portland's Tilson Technology Management, has been named to a national broadband working group set up by the U.S. Federal Communications Commission.
Schneider has been appointed by FCC Chairman Ajit Pai to serve on the Broadband Development Advisory Committee's Increasing Broadband Investment in Low-Income Communities working group, according to a news release.
The 17-member group, chaired by Tom Ferree, CEO and chairman of Connected Nation, is tasked with guiding states and localities on developing recommendations to accelerate the deployment of high-speed internet access for low-income communities.
The group will do that by identifying regulatory and other barriers to deploying high-speed broadband infrastructure and services to low-income communities; recommending FCC actions aimed at increasing investment incentives; and recommending FCC actions for boosting broadband adoption and use among low-income Americans.
Josh Broder, Tilson's CEO and a 2018 Mainebiz Business Leader of the Year in the large business category, welcomed Schneider's appointment to the working group.
"Rural and low-income communities in our country are well-served by Tim's addition to this important advisory council, he said. "Our team is proud of the expertise he'll be able to provide on this ever-increasing need."
Schneider added that he's honored by the appointment, calling it a unique opportunity to pair Tilson's expertise in deploying telecommunications infrastructure across the United States with his experience in state government on behalf of low-income utility customers.
A graduate of Harvard University and New York University Law School, Schneider joined Tilson in 2017 as general counsel.
As Maine's Public Advocate from 2013 to 2017, Schneider represented Maine consumers before the Public Utilities Commission to ensure affordable and high-quality utility services, especially for low-income customers.
Before that he worked as an attorney at Pierce Atwood, where he was on the law firm's energy practice group for close to five years, according to his LinkedIn profile.
Tilson employs around 550 people nationwide. and continues to be in hiring mode, listing dozens of open positions in several locations including Portland online. It recently opened new offices in Atlanta, Ga., and Hartford, Conn. and estimates that the average number of employees working in its Portland office is about 80.
