Portland-based Tilson Technology Management and Massachusetts-based MobilityTech were awarded a design-build contract by the New Hampshire Department of Transportation for a project along the F. E. Everett Turnpike that could potentially guide self-driving cars in the future.
Tilson’s contract award is for $4.23 million, according to a press release.
The project includes designing, planning and installing dynamic message signs, closed circuit cameras roadway detectors and wireless communications systems linking the “intelligent transportation systems” to the NHDOT Transportation Management Center. These systems streamline incident management, improve safety in work zones, facilitate greater fuel efficiency and create “smart roads” that could potentially guide future self-driving cars, the companies stated in the release.
“The ITS will deliver real-time traffic and road condition information that helps people travel more safely and it helps New Hampshire’s DOT manage their facilities more efficiently,” Mike Costa, MobilityTech principal and strategic partner to Tilson, said in a release. “Autonomous vehicles are right around the corner. The wireless infrastructure that Tilson builds out will be a key enabler to emerging technologies such as self-driving vehicles.”
The project leverages Tilson’s expertise in fiber optics, radio-frequency engineering and wireless construction and construction management and MobilityTech’s expertise in planning, designing, implementing and operating transportation technology projects, according to the release. It also taps IBI Group extensive experience in engineering intelligent transportation systems.
Tilson is an information technology professional services and network construction company that builds, integrates and maintains information technology and communications infrastructure.
