Trail Assoc. sues ex-employee over theft

Portland-based Maine Island Trail Association has sued its former business manager, alleging she stole more than $100,000 from the association.

The nonprofit filed the suit against Patricia Dano of Naples in Cumberland County Superior Court, which claims Dano embezzled $117,000 during the more than four years she worked for the group, according to the Portland Press Herald. The suit alleges Dano forged Executive Director Douglas Welch's signature on checks to pay herself and her creditors, used an association credit card for personal purchases and used funds from the association's operating account to pay her own credit card. Dano was fired a few weeks ago, but not for the embezzlement, which was discovered later. It was unclear why Dano was let go.

The association maintains more than 350 miles of a recreational water trail from New Hampshire to Machias Bay, and its 4,000 members are permitted to stay at the trail's 191 island campsites, according to the paper. Its annual budget is about $500,000.
