Travel halts for storm

Airlines across the Northeast have canceled over 2,100 flights today and Amtrak has stopped service in the region in preparation for the storm expected to dump up to two feet of snow in parts of New England.

The Associated Press reported that 2,134 flights within or out of the U.S. had been canceled as of late Thursday.

As of this morning, the flight tracking service Flight Aware showed no cancellations into Portland, though most of the arrival or destination airports for today's flights — like Chicago O'Hare, Newark Liberty, LaGuardia and JFK — have seen widespread cancellations.

The news service reported separately that the storm will stop Amtrak service from Boston's South Station after the departure of two trains this afternoon.

The Portland Press Herald reported that a blizzard warning has been issued for the state's capital district and much of the coast.

The weather has also canceled the annual Maine Polar Dip held on Portland's East End Beach, though the over 400 teams registered for the U.S. National Toboggan Championships in Camden plan to navigate through the storm.
