Tuition holds steady at community colleges
The Board of Trustees of the Maine Community College System voted yesterday to freeze tuition and fees for the upcoming academic year. It's the eighth time in 14 years the board has opted to freeze tuition.
For a full-time, in-state student, the average cost to attend will remain at roughly $3,300 a year, MCCS said in a press release. According to the system, that means Maine's seven community colleges will continue to have the lowest tuition and fees in New England, though their rate is still higher than the national community college average of $3,122. Out-of-state tuition will also remain unchanged at $5,160 a year for a full-time student. The system serves more than 18,500 students, an increase of 8,000 students over the last 10 years.
Last month, the University of Maine System approved a budget for the 2013 fiscal year that kept tuition levels the same for in-state students.
