A hydropower company based in Portland is hoping to establish a new manufacturing company in Eastport that could create up to 75 jobs.
Ocean Renewable Power Co. Monday announced to the city council a plan to create a turbine-manufacturing company at the Eastport Business Center, according to the Bangor Daily News. ORPC would recruit an entity to operate the new company, which could supply turbines to ORPC and other hydropower firms. The council supported the plan, and ORPC plans to submit an application for funding from the U.S. Department of Commerce's Economic Development Agency next week that will fund site improvements and equipment. Washington county commissioners, Eastern Maine Development Corp. and the Sunrise Economic Development Council will assist with the application.
ORPC in February unveiled a tidal turbine unit that will be deployed in Cobscook Bay off the coast of Eastport, the largest of its kind ever in U.S. waters.
