Two groups share $542K to enroll uninsured

Two Maine organizations will share just over half a million federal dollars to help people sign up for health insurance through an online exchange that is part of the Affordable Care Act.

The Associated Press reported the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced Thursday that Western Maine Community Action Inc. and Fishing Partnership Health Plan will get $541,846 to run what federal officials are calling “navigator” programs.

Those programs intend to help guide uninsured people through buying plans offered on the exchange, which are expected to open enrollment Oct. 1.

Nationally, the federal department has awarded $67 million in grants to navigator programs.
