Two likely PUC nominees named

Two members of Gov. Paul LePage’s staff are being considered for two soon-to-be-vacant seats on the Maine Public Utilities Commission.

The Portland Press Herald reported that LePage is assessing Patrick Woodcock, director of the Governor’s Energy Office, and Carlisle McLean, the governor's chief legal counsel, as potential nominees for two PUC seats. The newspaper, which cited state and industry officials, has not received confirmation from LePage’s press office.

Tom Welch, the PUC’s current chairman, is leaving his position by the end of the year. David Littell, the remaining PUC member who was nominated by Gov. John Baldacci, is vacating his seat in March. PUC member Mark Vannoy was renominated by LePage last year.

The newspaper said if Woodcock and McLean are ultimately chosen as PUC members, the move would help LePage realize his energy policy objectives.
