Two Maine restaurants make OpenTable's list of top 100 eateries in the US

Restaurant exterior File Photo / Renee Cordes Fore Street, a Portland mainstay since 1996, is one of two Maine restaurants that made OpenTable's Top 100 list for 2024. The restaurant was also on last year's list.

A prestigious list of the country's "Top 100 Restaurants" for 2024 features two in Maine, both of which are owned by chef Sam Hayward and restaurateur Dana Street in Portland.

OpenTable, the restaurant booking and review website, named two Pine Tree State eateries to its list, published last week: Fore Street, which opened in 1996, and Scales, a waterfront seafood spot that opened in 2016.

Fore Street was also on the 2023 list, along with Earth at Hidden Pond in Kennebunkport and Franny’s Bistro in Camden. Scales was the only Maine eatery on OpenTable's 2022 list

To find the country’s hottest dining destinations in 2024, OpenTable researchers analyzed more than 14 million reviews by diners, along with a host of other factors including diner ratings, reservation demand and percentage of five-star reviews.

Among other New England states, Massachusetts had six restaurants on this year’s roster and Rhode Island had one, while Connecticut, Vermont and New Hampshire didn't make the list.

"This year's Top 100 list reflects the breadth of restaurants on OpenTable,” said Debby Soo, CEO of OpenTable. “For diners, there's something for everyone on this list — it's an amazing hit list for locals and travelers too."

2025 predictions

OpenTable’s consumer research bodes well for the industry in 2025, with more than half (54%) of survey respondents planning to dine out more often next year than they did in 2024.

Younger generations are leading the movement, with 71% of Gen Zers and 68% of millennials planning to increase their dining frequency in 2025.

The site also predicts three dining trends that emerged this year to continue in 2025 including midweek dining (“Is Wednesday the new Friday?”); solo dining; and food-focused “experiences” from multi-course tasting menus to cooking classes.
