Tom’s of Maine Founder Tom Chappell is scheduled as a guest speaker for the University of Maine’s second annual Black Bear Business Conference on April 24.
The half-day conference, which will be held at the UMaine Buchanan Alumni House in Orono, “is designed to bring Maine's small business owners and entrepreneurs together with economic development resources and successful business leaders,” according to the UMaine Alumni Association, which hosts the event. The conference will consist of presentations, exhibits and panel discussions that will focus on a number of topics, including technology, financing, marketing and legal issues associated with starting a business.
Chappell, who now runs Rambler’s Way Farm in Kennebunk, will be joined by several other speakers throughout the day. Corson “Cork” Ellis, founder of Portland-based Kepware Technologies, is scheduled to deliver the conference’s keynote speech. Dan Kerluke, founder of Orono-based Double Blue Sports Analytics, will have his own talk at the end of the day.
The conference also will have Maine entrepreneurs panel with Kate McAleer, founder of Rockland-based craft chocolate maker Bixby & Co.; Charles Friedman, founder of FlowFold; Abe Furth, co-founder and co-owner of Woodman’s Bar & Grill, Verve and Orono Brewing Co.; and Spencer Wood, a UMaine graduate student who is developing a campus ridesharing smartphone app called Tip Whip. Jess Knox, statewide coordinator for Blackstone Accelerates Growth, will moderate the panel.
