According to University of Maine officials, for the first time in recent history, the UMaine system will be implementing a campuswide waitlist for prospective students after receiving a record number of applications for the fall of 2016 at its flagship Orono campus.
“The interest in UMaine among prospective students is truly exciting and speaks to the value of the University of Maine and Maine itself,” UMaine President Susan Hunter said in a prepared statement about the introduction of the waitlist. “Our commitment to providing a high-quality education at an affordable price resonates with students and families.”
Hunter also made the announcement Thursday night at the Mainebiz “On the Road” event at the Ocean Gateway in Portland.
UMaine officials say that over 14,000 hopeful students submitted qualifying applicants — far above the projected class size of 2,150 — putting UMaine in a position to more selective about applicants entering the system.
As part of its One University initiative, UMaine officials say they will collaborate with other campuses in the system so that qualified prospective students will be able to pursue their education at the public state university. Applicants opting for wait list status will find out if they have been accepted by May 6.
If the Orono campus is unable to offer admittance for the fall semester, waitlisted applicants will be guaranteed a spot at one of the other UMaine system campuses: at the University of Maine at Augusta, University of Maine at Fort Kent, University of Maine at Machias, University of Maine at Presque Isle and the University of Southern Maine.
“The strong interest in UMaine has resulted in a highly competitive applicant pool,” Jeffrey Hecker, UMaine executive vice president and provost who oversees enrollment management said in a statement. “We’re attracting students from throughout New England who are interested in the educational experience associated with a nationally ranked research university. Our location in one of the most attractive states in the country and our competitive tuition are also draws for out-of-state students.”
Thursday’s announcement of the waitlist comes on the heels of the system announcing that it would be continuing its six-year trend of freezing in-state tuition at its public universities. According to the system, in the fiscal year of 2016, it cost an in-state student $23,406 to attend UMaine’s Orono campus, including room and board, compared to $41,676 for an out-of-state student.
