UMaine System faces $400M in deferred maintenance

A consulting firm’s report found that the University of Maine’s buildings are underused compared with other public universities and that backlogged facilities maintenance could cost the system more than $400 million.

The Bangor Daily News reported the study by consultant Sightlines found that the percentage of buildings in need of renovation has increased to 40%, up from 30% in a 2009 review.

Janet Waldron, the University of Maine System’s vice president for administration and finance, said the system will use the report as a guide for focusing the system’s investments. To maximize use of its current buildings, the report found the system would either need to reduce its total footprint by about 15% or boost its student population by around 4,000. Those numbers come from comparing square footage per student with other public universities.

University officials estimate the system faces a $36 million budget shortfall in 2015.
