UMaine System tables furlough

The University of Maine System has opted not to send more than 2,000 staff members on a two-day unpaid leave as a budget balancing mechanism, according to a joint statement from the system and employee bargaining groups.

The system and the employee union last week said it was considering the two-day furlough, which would have saved the system $1.2 million and prevented the layoff of about 100 clerical workers. But the system has instituted other cost-cutting measures at six of its seven campuses and the system level to balance its $15.1 million shortfall for its current budget, which ends June 30, so the furlough isn't necessary, according to the statement and the Bangor Daily News.
