The University of Maine System Board of Trustees yesterday approved a $523 million budget for fiscal year 2012 and a 4.3% tuition increase.
The tuition hike for 2012 is the lowest percentage increase in 10 years, and the lowest dollar increase, an average of $311 per full-time student, in eight years, according to the Bangor Daily News. Next year's tuition at the seven universities ranges from $7,300 at the University of Maine at Presque Isle to $10,588 at the University of Maine in Orono, according to The Associated Press. Projected enrollment for the system's schools in 2012 is 1.8% below 2011 enrollment, according to the Daily News.
Trustees also approved a $7 million decrease in the annual budget, due to a loss of stimulus funds and no increased appropriations from the state. Also approved were a number of construction projects at various campuses, including construction of an $867,000 biomass heating plant at the University of Maine at Fort Kent's Sports Center and Lodge residential building. UMS Chancellor Richard Pattenaude also formally submitted his resignation when his contract expires next year.
