UMaine trustees to freeze tuition if state agrees

The University of Maine System will hold the line on in-state tuition for undergraduates if the state maintains its current $176 million funding level for the state university system.

Last year, university trustees approved a tuition freeze for the first time in 25 years and, according to a press release, is undertaking a system-wide review of administrative costs and structures.

"Tuition rates are rising rapidly at public universities across the country — here in Maine we are bucking the trend by proposing what, in effect, would be a three-year freeze on in-state, undergraduate tuition," UMS Chancellor James Page said in a prepared statement. "We are asking state leadership to keep our funding level; in return, we will hold tuition level."

The request also asks that the state continue to fund the Maine Economic Improvement Fund at $14.7 million, debt service payments at $3.3 million and the Casco Bay Estuary Project at $35,000.

According to a UMS website, the $14.7 million MEIF helped students in the system to bring in around $58 million in research grants to the state.
