UMS cost-cutting plan OK'd

Tuition increases of 6% and a reduction in under-enrolled classes are among the proposals approved by the University of Maine System Trustees yesterday in a plan that addresses a projected $42.8 million revenue shortfall over the next four years.

Also included in the initiative "New Challenges, New Directions" submitted by Chancellor Richard Pattenaude are plans to double the number of online students, offer three-year degrees in certain subjects and contain the cost of benefits and compensation for staff. The initiative contains 37 actions designed to address the shortfall prompted by declining enrollment, lower state appropriations and the recession.

The university system has trimmed about 150 jobs in the past 18 months. Pattenaude told Maine Public Broadcasting Network that he anticipates more cuts are likely.
