UNE Pharm program gets state OK

The Maine State Board of Education granted the University of New England unconditional approval to launch its college of pharmacy.

The four-year Pharm.D. graduate program is scheduled to begin on the school's Westbrook College campus in Portland in the fall of 2009, according to a press release. Construction on related classroom space on the campus will begin no later than March 2008. The accreditation process is underway and the school plans to have its final application in by May 2008.

UNE's pharmacy program is already well under way. This fall, 53 pre-pharmacy students began their semester on UNE's Biddeford campus and Hannaford Bros. Co., the supermarket company based in Scarborough, recently gave UNE's College of Pharmacy a $1 million grant to help the school build a clinical practice library. The company also "loaned" UNE a Hannaford executive to direct the university's Pharmacy Experiential Programs.
