The University of New England has signed an agreement with two Spanish universities to offer classes for UNE students and establish a cooperative graduate program through its pharmacy school. UNE also plans to open a campus in Morocco in the next two years.
UNE's agreement with the University Pablo de Olavide in Seville, Spain, allows students to take lab courses in organic chemistry, microbiology, anatomy and physiology meeting university requirements for undergraduate health programs, according to a press release. UNE said it might be the first U.S. semester-abroad program to establish lab-based science courses in English in a non-English speaking country. Students can also take other courses in English, and will also be required to take an intensive Spanish language course. At least 17 students from UNE's Westbrook College of Health Professions and College of Arts and Sciences are scheduled to be in Seville this fall, and 14 have already signed up for the spring 2013 semester.
UNE also signed an agreement with the University of Granada to explore opportunities between the two universities' colleges of pharmacy that would allow UNE doctor of pharmacy students to take some of their elective courses and clinical rotations in Granada and would foster research collaborations. UNE President Danielle Ripich said the partnerships satisfy the university's strategic goal of globalization.
UNE expects to open a campus in Tangier, Morocco, in fall 2013 or spring 2014. UNE has campuses in Biddeford and Portland.
