Unemployment drops for November

Preliminary estimates show Maine's seasonally adjusted unemployment figures for November are down slightly from October's figures.

The latest numbers put Maine's unemployment rate at 7.2%, down from October's 7.4%, which translates to 51,300 people without work and seeking employment.

The November figure is close to the state's unemployment rate in November 2011, when the unemployment rate stood at 7.1%.

Maine remains lower than the national average, which stands at 7.7%, according to the latest numbers released by Maine's Department of Labor.

In comparing the state and national unemployment rates, the Department of Labor reports that the number of unemployed people actively seeking work is higher in Maine than the national average. If the ratio of job seekers in the state to overall population were on par with national figures, the DOL reports, Maine's unemployment rate would be nearly 5.4%.

Maine continues to have a higher ratio of people employed to the total population than the national average. Around 60.5% of the state's population is employed compared with 58.7% of the national population.
