Unemployment rate edges lower

Maine's unemployment rate dipped to 8.2% in October, a slightly better showing than the previous month but not enough to signal much improvement in the work force.

The number of unemployed workers in October totaled 57,200, according to preliminary, seasonally adjusted figures released by the Maine Department of Labor. In September, the jobless rate was a revised 8.5%, with 59,600 Mainers out of work.

The October rate is significantly higher than during the same time last year, when the unemployment rate was 5.7%. Nationally, the jobless rate was 10.2%, up from 9.8% in September and 6.6% in October 2008.

Maine's lower unemployment rate is not an indication that work force conditions have improved considerably, the release states.
